About the project

Many stories have been passed down to the writer, Sarah Jansen, through generations of her family and she is working on a novelised account of her grandmother’s grandmother.

Her name was Alphonsine. She was born almost exactly a century before Sarah, and led a dramatic, passionate life. Here’s a story synopsis.

For over a decade, Sarah has been researching the era and the regions Alphonsine lived in, the laws  – marriage, religious, education, property ownership, immigration – that affected her life, as well as the social realities of the time.

To continue the research, Sarah travelled through Québec and New England February to April 2013.
